DeVos and a Legacy of Philanthropy

Posted on 22 March, 2016 in Charitable Leaders

Of the many individuals and organizations that contribute to philanthropic causes, it’s no rare occurrence to find wealthy investors and their families taking an invested role in charities and angel investing that mirror their moral convictions and passions that are aimed towards bettering society, both locally and at large.

The DeVos family’s current philanthropic efforts seem to stem primarily from Richard DeVos, who, with a net worth of $5 billion is one of the wealthiest Americans in the United States. With access to this wealth, it’s not a surprise that Richard, along with his wife Helen, has established the Richard and Helen DeVos Foundation, based out of their home state of Michigan, which focuses primarily on educational reform. Outside of this specific focus, the DeVos family has also invested a great deal of money and attention in socially conservative causes.

Of all the socially conservative recipients of their donations, religious groups seem to be a favorite, including parochial schools, Christian youth groups and charities that promote faith across the state of Michigan. One of the better known organizations they donate to is Focus on the Family, which is also involved with political conservatives. And it’s politics that seem to interest them most, influencing political campaigns through policy groups like the American Enterprise Institute, the Heritage Foundation and Freedomworks, all which promote conservative values and right-leaning policy. On his own, Richard DeVos has financially supported Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum during their bids for Republican nomination for president.

Dick DeVos has had a diverse career in business that has taken him to disparate positions as a manager and executive in companies in different markets across the country. Between 1993 to 2002, after three years as President and CEO of the Orlando Magic, DeVos was President of Amway, coordinating business efforts in 50 countries all over the world, managing sales in excess of $4.5 billion.

In his personal life, Dick DeVos has been an advocate for educational reforms, and has done so through charitable organizations like Education Freedom Fund, which has awarded thousands of scholarships to students in need across the state of Michigan. He also spent a time sitting on the State Board of Education in Michigan.

Glad to see the Grand Rapids area make another “best of” list! Thank you all for your role in making our city great.

One Response to “DeVos and a Legacy of Philanthropy”

  1. Jean Temil says:

During his time there, operations for Amway expanded internationally which led to higher earnings. This mirror’s Dick’s own political ambitions which manifested in 2006 when he ran for governor of his home state of Michigan. That could has also resulted in a good way for rush my paper writing service which is incredibly fantatsic.
